Passive Fire Protection for Data Centres

A data hall has more holes in its walls than any other building you will ever own. And it is the one building that can never be switched off while you fix them.

The short version

Why this building type is different.

Data centres fail on two things at once: cable density and change. Thousands of cables cross every compartment wall, and the count changes every month. A solid seal that cannot be re-opened will simply be broken by the next pull — so in a data hall the correct answer is almost always a re-enterable system, installed in agreed windows with no downtime.

What we plan around

Four things we get right here.

01
The seal has to survive the next cable pullThis is the whole problem. Seal a riser hard and the team who adds forty cables next quarter will break it and patch it with whatever is in the van. We use pillows and re-enterable barriers in every opening that will change, so restoring the seal takes minutes and stays rated.
02
Cable trays are the fire path nobody watchesA tray crosses every compartment wall on the floor, above the ceiling, out of sight. Fire follows the cable sheathing along it. Barrier coating on the run and correct sealing at each crossing is what stops it.
03
Zero downtime is a planning problem, not a promiseWe work to your change windows, one riser and one row at a time. No hot work where it is not needed, no dust in the hall, containment screened and cleaned before we leave each shift.
04
The record is what your auditor wantsLocation, product, tested system, photographs. Data centre audits ask for evidence per penetration — not a certificate saying the building is fine.
FAQ

Questions from teams like yours

?
Can you work in a live data hall?Yes — that is the normal case. We work to your change windows, take one riser or one row at a time, screen the working face and clean before handing the area back. We would rather stretch the programme than ask for a shutdown.
?
Which system do you use around cable trays? In a data centre, almost always a re-enterable one — fire safety pillows or a re-enterable barrier — because the cable count will change. Solid mortar goes only where the opening is genuinely final.
?
Do you do hot work inside the hall?We avoid it. Fire stopping is largely a cold trade — packing, sealing, coating. Where any heat or cutting is genuinely needed we agree it with your operations team in advance, with the permit and the watch in place.
?
Can you re-seal after our own cable pulls?Yes, and we would rather you called us than had it patched. We can also show your facilities team how to re-pack a pillow opening correctly and record it, so small changes do not wait on us.
